CTC Breakdown โ€” Where Your Salary Goes

ComponentTypical RangeIncluded In
Basic Salary35% โ€“ 50% of CTCIn-hand (taxable)
HRA40-50% of Basic (metro/non-metro)In-hand (partly exempt, Old Regime)
Special AllowanceBalancing figureIn-hand (taxable)
Employer PF12% of BasicNot in-hand โ€” goes to your EPF account
Gratuity4.81% of BasicNot in-hand โ€” paid on exit after 5 yrs
Employee PF12% of BasicDeducted from in-hand โ€” goes to EPF

This is why in-hand salary is typically 70-85% of CTC โ€” the gap is PF (both sides), gratuity, and income tax.

How This Calculator Works

  1. Basic Salary = CTC ร— Basic % (you set this โ€” most companies use 35-50%).
  2. Employer PF = 12% of Basic, and Gratuity = 4.81% of Basic โ€” both are part of CTC but never reach your bank account.
  3. Gross Salary = CTC โˆ’ Employer PF โˆ’ Gratuity.
  4. Taxable Income = Gross Salary โˆ’ Standard Deduction (โ‚น75,000 New / โ‚น50,000 Old) โˆ’ other deductions (Old Regime).
  5. Income Tax computed using FY 2026-27 slab rates for your chosen regime.
  6. In-Hand Salary = Gross Salary โˆ’ Employee PF (12% of Basic) โˆ’ Professional Tax โˆ’ Income Tax.

๐Ÿ“ข Things That Affect Your Actual In-Hand Salary

  • ESIC: If your gross salary is under โ‚น21,000/month, an additional 0.75% employee ESIC contribution may apply.
  • Professional Tax: Varies by state โ€” up to โ‚น2,500/year in states like Maharashtra, Karnataka, West Bengal; nil in states like Delhi, Haryana, UP.
  • Variable pay / bonus: Often shown as part of CTC but paid only on performance criteria โ€” not guaranteed monthly income.
  • PF wage ceiling: Statutorily, PF is mandatory on Basic+DA up to โ‚น15,000/month, though most companies apply 12% on full Basic voluntarily โ€” check your company's specific policy.
CTC (Cost to Company) includes everything the company spends on you โ€” basic pay, allowances, employer PF contribution, gratuity, and benefits. In-hand salary is only what's credited to your bank account after PF, professional tax and income tax deductions โ€” usually 15-25% lower than CTC.
Employees contribute 12% of Basic salary to EPF, matched by an equal 12% employer contribution (as per EPFO rules). Only the employee's 12% affects your in-hand salary directly.
Because CTC includes employer PF contribution and gratuity โ€” money set aside for your future that never reaches your monthly bank account โ€” plus your own PF, professional tax, and income tax deductions from what remains.
Check your actual offer letter or salary slip โ€” most Indian companies structure Basic at 35-50% of CTC. If unsure, 40% is a reasonable industry-average estimate.
No. Gratuity is a lump-sum benefit paid only when you leave the company after 5+ years of continuous service (with some exceptions). It's included in your CTC figure but never appears in your monthly salary.
Only employees whose Basic+DA exceeds โ‚น15,000/month at the time of joining, and who were never EPF members before, can opt out (with employer's agreement). Once enrolled, PF is generally mandatory until retirement/withdrawal.

This is a simplified estimate. Actual in-hand salary depends on your company's exact salary structure (HRA, special allowance, bonus, ESIC etc.) and state-specific professional tax rules. Tax computed uses FY 2026-27 slabs. Please check your official salary slip / offer letter for exact figures.
